His plane soared out of the clouds over Germany and soon he would be on the ground. He would be welcomed by throngs of ecstatic German citizens hungry for a message of Change. Change for Germany. Change for the world.
Women, overcome with weeping, would reach out to touch his hand. He was charismatic. He was a stunning orator. And he had a message that would resonate with a people struggling under the weight of high unemployment and high prices.
In a carefully stage-managed appearance, timed perfectly for political impact, Berlin stretched wide her waiting arms as hundreds of thousands awaited his words. A message to Berlin and to the world. Now is our moment! Now is our time!
Just in case you might be thinking I am referring to an American candidate making a speech in Berlin today, let me disabuse you. I am not. Not at all. I am referring to of course...Adolf Hitler. The freely elected National Socialist leader of Germany in 1934 with 85% of the vote. Have you seen Triumph of the Will?
